    Peer Support Specialists are individuals in recovery from mental health and/or substance use disorders. They identify and apply personal experiences to assist others in the early stage of recovery. Peer-run programs focus on general support and advocacy to promote social inclusion strategies.

    AFFORDABLE CARE ACT

    The Affordable Care Act provides Americans with better health security by putting in place comprehensive health insurance reforms that will:

    • Expand coverage
    • Hold insurance companies accountable
    • Lower health care costs
    • Guarantee more choice
    • Enhance the quality of care for all Americans

    The Affordable Care Act actually refers to two separate pieces of legislation — the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (P.L. 111-148) and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 (P.L. 111-152).

    The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is responsible for implementing laws passed by Congress related to Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and the Basic Health Program.

    MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES ACT (MHSA)
    In any year, between 5% and 7% of adults have a serious mental illness as do a similar percentage of children — between 5% and 9%. Therefore, more than two million children, adults and seniors in California are affected by a potentially disabling mental illness every year.

    No parent should have to give up custody of a child and no adult or senior should have to become disabled or homeless to get mental health services as too often happens now. No individual or family should have to suffer inadequate or insufficient treatment due to language or cultural barriers to care.

Moving More and Sitting Less Is Good for The Mind As Well As The Body

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY HAS LONG BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH BETTER MENTAL HEALTH. WHAT’S NOT WELL UNDERSTOOD, HOWEVER, IS WHETHER TOO MUCH ACTIVITY CAN NEGATIVELY IMPACT PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING.

As a researcher on physical activity and mental health, I often hear people say, “The more active I am, the better I feel.” That suggests more physical activity is always needed to increase psychological well-being. However, you may know people who have a very physically demanding job or who train a lot and are not necessarily their better selves.

Similarly, others who spend several hours sitting down report they do not feel very well at the end of the day because they have moved very little.

Our group of researchers and students considered whether there is a linear link between physical activity levels and mental health and whether sedentary habits, such as sitting all day, influenced this relationship.

Previous studies identified linear or inverted U-shaped relationships between physical activity and mental health. But the biggest problem with them was that the amount of physical activity was measured using a questionnaire. There is generally a significant difference between how people report their physical activity and what is measured when they use a bracelet with an accelerometer.
